I saw this over on Perpetual Fangirl in March and I thought I could put my own twist on this. This was created by Lost in a Story and you can see all of her posts here. This is a very interesting way to whittle down the ever-growing TBR shelf. This is definitely a way to finally whittle that TBR shelf down so it can be more manageable. To see all of the Perpetual Fangirl’s posts click here to see which books she has decided to keep or get rid of. Down the TBR Hole is a simple and efficient way of getting rid of all of those unneeded books.
How does it work?
- Go to your Goodreads to-read shelf.
- Order on ascending date added.
- Take the first 5 (or 10 if you’re feeling adventurous) books
- Read the synopses of the books
- Decide: keep it or should it go?
Simple as that. Next thing you know, you have a reasonable Want To Read shelf! For this weeks one, I will be doing 5 books. Hopefully, I can do the 10 books one in the next one. So let’s start!!
Book 1: The Gathering of Shadows by J.D Netto
Synopses: When the thread of hope is split into two, which side will you take?
After the capture of three book-bearers, Isaac, Xylia and Arundel are beckoned to return to Agalmath to meet the Dark One. Around the four corners of Elysium, Lucifer and his servants are gathering an army—uniting men, beast, Shadow and Nephilin to expand his kingdom.
Hidden in the shadows and holding one of Lucifer’s most faithful servants in captivity, the blood-drinkers continue to hunt down Isaac and the others, seeking to retrieve the Book of Letters.
Isaac and Xylia’s courage and willingness to fight is starting to wane as they now fear that the path they have taken will claim their lives.
“When the stars blood drink. When the moon red turns. When the snow melts away. That’s when Elysium will burn.”
Judgement: Keep
Book 2: The Siren by Kiera Cass
Synopses: “You must never do anything that might expose our secret. This means that, in general, you cannot form close bonds with humans. You can speak to us, and you can always commune with the Ocean, but you are deadly to humans. You are, essentially, a weapon. A very beautiful weapon. I won’t lie to you, it can be a lonely existence, but once you are done, you get to live. All you have to give, for now, is obedience and time…”
The same speech has been given hundreds of times to hundreds of beautiful girls who enter the sisterhood of sirens. Kahlen has lived by these rules for years now, patiently waiting for the life she can call her own. But when Akinli, a human, enters her world, she can’t bring herself to live by the rules anymore. Suddenly the life she’s been waiting for doesn’t seem nearly as important as the one she’s living now.
Judgement: Keep
Book 3: Last Call by Alice Clayton
Synopses: Simon and Caroline are back for another round of baking, banging, and big life changes. Settling in, but never settling down, Caroline has finally struck a balance between the professional and the personal. As one of the top interior designers in San Francisco, she travels all over Northern California between nook time with Simon.
Perpetual globetrotter Simon has cut his frequent flyer miles in half over the last year, preferring to balance his professional and personal life, as well.
The next step in their lives seems preordained—toasts, veils, and the aisle of rose petals. But when an accident on a photo shoot in Southeast Asia brings Caroline the most terrifying phone call she could ever imagine, she has to ask whether “till death do us part” is a more realistic prospect than faces most couples.
It’s been a grand adventure, and Caroline and Simon wouldn’t go out without the best surprise ending ever. One part sexy, one part laughter, a dash of exotic locales, and one pink nightie, mixed with passion, and you’ve got Last Call. Served with a side of Clive.
Judgement: No interest in reading
Book 4: The Defiant by Lisa M. Stasse
Synopses: In this gripping conclusion to The Forsaken Trilogy, Alenna’s loyalties are put the ultimate test—and it’s one of life and death.
Alenna Shawcross and the others who escaped the wheel are working toward an all-out assault on the United Northern Alliance. The plan is to dismantle it from the inside—and Alenna is one of the few people who can access the organization’s inner sanctum. But when she returns to the home she has nearly forgotten, she encounters old friends and is swept into a secret plan that puts everything she loves in danger.
Knowing what is at stake for her and her friends, Alenna ventures into the heart of the treacherous UNA. She’s determined to bring them down because freedom is the only choice. Or is it?
Judgement: Keep
Book 5: Abandon by Meg Cabot
Synopses: Last year, Pierce died – just for a moment. And when she was in the space between life and death, she met John. Tall dark and terrifying, it’s his job to usher souls from one realm to the next.
There’s a fierce attraction between them, which Pierce carries back into our world. But she knows that if she allows herself to fall for John she will be doomed to a life of shadows and loneliness in the Underworld. When things get dangerous for her, her only hope is to do exactly what John says. Can she trust a guy who lives for the dead?
Judgement: On the bench – comment below to say whether or not I should read it.
So that is my version of my first ever Down the TBR Hole! I will definitely do some of these in the near future. This is such a fun way to tackle down my TBR. I know there have to be some books on my ‘want-to-read’ list that I just added to say I will want to read them.
Do you agree with my decision on the books that are within this post? Comment below and let me know what your thoughts on them were.

I deleted my entire GoodReads TBR in January. I figured I read the books I really wanted to and the ones that have been sitting on my TBR for the last year or 5 weren’t even worth looking at anymore.

Unfortunately the only books on my TBR list are the ones I’ve agreed to read from publishers, authors etc, so I can’t really do this. Could do with adding books that I ‘want’ to read to my list.

This is a fantastic idea! My TBR is running wild at the moment and definitely needs pruning. 🙂

Is that the same Meg Cabot who wrote Princess Diaries? (I’ll have to look that up after this). The books that you take off your TBR, will you save them someplace else so you don’t forget them?

The gathering of shadows sounds good, I’m glad you kept it. I cleared my tbr list this year as well, but somehow already have tons of books added 😂

I remember seeing Gathering of Shadows around years ago but then it just slipped my mind. I love The Selection but I have no interest in reading the Siren ahaha.
