“Happiness is a strange, frightening, fragile feeling when you’re not used to it” – A Promise of Fire by Amanda Bouchet
I really really ENJOYED this book! I feel like this book has flown under the radar for fantasy lovers. I highly recommend this book for lovers of the Throne of Glass Series by Sarah J. Maas and Snow like Ashes trilogy by Sara Raasch.
Can I just say I love Griffin? I completely understand his whole ‘I’m strong and hard, nothing can hurt me’ vibe, but he is such a cinnamon roll. I love him. Yes, there is an insta-love vibe between Griffin and Cat’s relationship BUT it is the most annoying slow burn romance that I have read in months. I adored it so much that if anything happens to either of them in the next two books in this trilogy, I will make myself a hole, hide in it and never come out. I just need them to be okay at the end of this trilogy!
I loved the way the author kept the Cat’s past life a secret throughout the whole book because it allows us, readers, to try and piece things together to make a true understanding of why Cat is the way she is. But, I just wish at the end of the book the author could have made it clear that she was going to tell Griffin. But I can definitely see she is going to be forced to tell him at some point in the next book. I really can’t wait to see why Cat runs away from her home and why the Queen is not meant to find her.
The world in this book is amazing. I loved the whole idea of having the 3 separate kingdoms which are in a weird peace agreement and how the royals are chosen in each kingdom is so different than anything I have read in any other fantasy novel. The only thing I don’t understand why she decided to keep using the Greek Gods as the main god images in this world. I really don’t see how it fits BUT the way she did it I still love it!
I loved all of the characters in this book. Each of them adds a certain humour, tragic back story, and many other additions to this story. I loved how Cat’s life has basically been turned upside down and how all of the characters she meets makes a big effect on her character.
I can’t wait to see how more of the world is explored and how Griffin goes as a character. I love the combo of him and Cat. Something about their union just makes me so giddy.
